Manhattan federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York agreed to drop charges against a Kramer Levin pro bono client facing a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence and subsequent deportation. Upon being engaged by the client, Kramer Levin, who served as co-counsel with the Federal Defenders of New York, filed motions highlighting weaknesses in the government’s case. Shortly thereafter, the government agreed to drop the charges. Under the terms of the agreement, our client will not have to face trial and all charges against her will be dropped in six months. The agreement, known as a deferred prosecution, is extremely rare for cases of this magnitude.
