As the state continues to work through the COVID-19 outbreak, New York’s Attorney General issued a guidance to help New Yorkers identify scammers that may try to take advantage of the outbreak. The AG’s office is reminding individuals that there is currently no FDA-approved vaccine to prevent the disease, so they should ignore any offers that state otherwise. New Yorkers should also be aware of potential charity scams and coronavirus-related investment scams and are encouraged to research whether a given charity is legitimate before responding to any solicitations. In addition, the Attorney General is encouraging New Yorkers to beware of phishing attempts, which may purport to be from a health authority but contain malware or a link designed to steal account passwords. In particular, the guidance cautions healthcare providers, hospitals, or other organizations in the health supply chain to be on high alert as they may be at a higher risk for phishing attempts.
