At the request of the FDA, the DOJ filed a complaint and secured a temporary injunction from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida to halt the sale of “Miracle Mineral Solution” (“MMS”), a product that the defendants claim can cure, mitigate, treat or prevent COVID-19 and a number of other chronic diseases without supporting evidence. According to the FDA, the defendants, the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing and four associated individuals, violated the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by selling MMS, which is an unapproved and misbranded drug. MMS, when combined with an included activator, has a chlorine dioxide content equivalent to industrial bleach. Previously, on April 8, 2020, the FDA and FTC issued a joint warning letter to Genesis, informing it that it was in violation of federal law. As a result of the defendants’ response that they had no intention of taking any corrective action, the court granted the DOJ’s motion for a temporary restraining order and also gave the FDA permission to enter and search the defendants’ places of business and take other necessary measures to monitor and ensure compliance with the Order.
