Corporate associate Gariel Nahoum and Litigation associate Samantha M. Ford obtained a grant of asylum for a Tibetan refugee who was tortured and imprisoned by the Chinese government based on his pro-independence political activities and religion. The client was arrested while attempting to distribute religious materials near his village and was then subjected to repeated beatings by the local police. Following his release, the client was continually harassed by the Chinese government, including being subjected to searches of his home. Fearing for his safety and that of his family, he fled to the United States. The case was complicated by the challenges of proving the identity of the client who arrived in the United States without any documentation. Intellectual Property associate Aaron Frankel supervised. The matter was referred to Kramer Levin by Song Tsen.
